Syria promises one more time, should we believe?

Thanks to our super technology planes, trains and of course smart phones the world is a smaller planet than it was 50 years ago. But our solidairty also should be bigger than it was 50 years ago.

We as human-beings can not stay silence against tragedies happening around us.

If there is a nation suffering at the hands of a repressive state, we can not stay indifferent. If it is needed, we should accept to be there with our states to protect humanity against tyrannies.

Although we couldn’t do a very good job, we were in Bosnia to stop Radovan Karadzic’s crimes against humanity. If we had not acted to stop Karadzic in Bosnia, the civil world would be partner of the crimes of Karadzic.

What’s happening Syrian cities, towns and villages now is not so different than the massacre happened Bosnia 17 years ago. Syrians government killed more than 10.000 people in a year. Unfortunately despite all efforts of Arab Leauge, UN and Turkey’ this tragedy is still going.

The Syrian regime is attacking and killing it’s own people. Under the pressue of the world Syrian dictator Bashar al Assad lot’s of times promised to stop this bloodshed but he never kept his promises.

Regarding unkept promises of Mr. Assad, we can be sure that he will use same tactics just to earn more time just for new killings. However I hope the time will show that I was wrong but I am preety sure that he will not comply to the plan propesed to him by UN and Arab League’s Special Envoy Kofi Annan.

By declaring the world that he would comply with the plan proposed by Annan, just 10 hours before deadline, he is trying to buy time one more time. Like all other dictators, he knows that any plan proposing fair elections would end his clans authority. He knows that if he applies this plan at the and of the day he will loose his authority.

We shouldn't be naive. There is no reason for Assad to pave the way for a peaceful and democratical transition. He is feeling the supportive hands of China, Russia and Iran staying on his shoulder while shooting his own people.

Two months before the starting of uprising, Assad admitted that he would never implent democratical reforms since Syria was not a country needing reforms. Four months after the uprising he gave his second speech and declared that he would fight against 'terrorists' until 'last drop' of his blood.

Anyway, Annan’s cease-fire declaration will start at 06.00 am (today) with Damascus time. I think not for Assad but for our respect to Mr. Kofi Annan, we should wait to see the results. However, if the Syrian regime doesn’t comply with the truce, I would like to watch Mr. Annan’s final statement. Mr. Annan shouldn't wait long time for this final statement.

Let me request one more thing form Mr. Annan. I would like to ask him to explain all assurances and promises given by regime and it’s international partners (Russia, China and Iran). Then we may learn, Syrians are figting against what kind of a tyranny and it's partners for their dignity and freedom..

Summer in Istanbul

If you are one of the millions of Europeans planing to spend your summer in İstanbul, please copy this article and keep it in your bag. Because it may worth to have a look while you are in İstanbul.

İstanbul is one of the hottest European cultural cities. So you need to find some beaches to get cool while enjoying your holiday in Istanbul.

As a local Babelian my personal tip for you is to discover Ağva. It is a small and amazing seaside town close to İstanbul. Hence; If you are looking for sea, sun, nice beaches with golden sand and delicious local foods Ağva should be your first choice in Istanbul. I was in Ağva yesterday; just to discover the beuties for you, so I would likte to assume you that this is an article written on the ground.

From Istanbul, It takes close to 2 hours by bus. You can go there by renting a car also. You need to go Uskudar district to find buses departing for Agva. The price for the Bus is 20 lira(10 Euro)... In case you can not find the Ağva-Şile bus station in Uskudar don’t worry. Just ask someone that can speak English and feel the distinguished Turkish hospitailty.

Anyway let's imagine you are at bus, the trip to Ağva started, After 2 hours your bus will stop at Şile. This is a very beatiful seaside town also. If you are not dying to swim in Ağva as soon as possible, let's get out of the bus, have break, eat something in Şile’s amazing restoturants. Bytheway you can find lot’s of beaches in Şile also. But please keep in mind that Şile is a bit dangerous place to swim. After getting on the bus for Ağva it will take just 30-40 minutes to reach there. Ağva is a very green and hot area.

To be honest, I don’t think local peaole of Ağva are so famous with their great hospitality. Since it is touristic town and like 80 percent of the population is tourist, just like you. You can easily find an hotel or hostel room in Ağva but if you can book rook in advance on internet also. The prices for the room are around 30-40 Euro for a day in July. But try your chance, don’t be shy and ask for a cheaper price. In Turkey asking for discount is fair, it is a reality of Turkish tradition of trade.

Enjoy the sun and sea guys....

Turkey: The new indispensable nation

Turkey put its imprint as one of the most influential countries not only on 2010, but on the first decade of the third millennium. At the start of the new decade, too, Turkey’s geopolitical position, rich historical heritage, cultural depth, well-educated young population, everstrengthening democracy, growing economy, and constructive foreign policy make it an indispensable country in a world transformed by rapid globalization.

By making use of all of its assets, Turkey is contributing to regional stability and peace and working towards a global order based on justice, equality, and transparency. As an emerging power, Turkey will continue to realize its own potential and simultaneously contribute to global peace.

Turkey seeks to contribute to regional and global peace by facilitating democratic reforms domestically and implementing a principled foreign policy. As a NATO member, Turkey aims to become a full member of the European Union and establish cordial relations with all of its southern and eastern neighbors. Turkey’s posture – looking both East and West – is neither paradoxical nor inconsistent. On the contrary, Turkey’s multidimensional geopolitical position is an asset for the region. There are few countries that can play such a critical role. Those who see the world through fearful lenses have difficulty understanding Turkey’s rising profile and dynamism. But the realities of the twenty-first century necessitate a multi-dimensional and inclusive political perspective.

Turkey is following a proactive foreign policy stretching from the Balkans to the Middle East and the Caucasus. We are helping to facilitate political stability in Iraq and helping the NATO mission in Afghanistan. And, of paramount importance, Turkey is making enormous efforts to help establish an independent and sustainable Palestinian state – efforts that are appreciated by Turkey’s Western and Eastern friends alike.

Today, Turkey is following a policy that represents a sense of justice in the Middle East, and is working toward the removal of artificial borders and walls among the region’s peoples. We desire to live in a region where the dignity of every person is respected. That is why we have objected to Israel’s aggression in and blockade of Gaza, and will continue to do so.

We know that it is not possible to attain global peace unless we establish sustainable peace in the Middle East, which requires resolving the Palestinian question. Therefore, we urge Israel and all other countries involved to follow constructive and peaceful policies.

Turkey will continue to work toward a just and equitable global order in 2011 and beyond. This is a responsibility emanating from our history, geography, and the universal values that we hold.

Excerpted from an article in Hurriyet Daily News and Economic Review by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, prime minister of the Republic of Turkey.

Turkey's Masked Ball

For today so far as we can see AK Party is doing what the majority of Turkish society, their voters asked them to do at last parliamentary election. As long as they reflect the desire of the majority I am pretty sure that peaceful days and the end of the Turkish masked bale is closer for Turkey.

It has been long time I did not write on Turkish politics for you the Babelians. The last thing I had written was on Turkey’s cross border operation Iraq’s Kurdistan mountains in 2008. Clashes between PKK guerillas and Turkish Army was main reason of worsening relation and soaring tension between Kurdistan Regional Government and Ankara.

Because of Turkish governments clever steps, relations became so much better than it was before. Currently is main commercial partner of Kurdistan despite ongoing clashes between PKK militants and Turkish soldiers. Turkey is planning to open an embassy at Kurdistan capiatal city Erbil next month. Iraqi Kurdish leaders are praising Turkey’s constructive steps to stabilize their country.

Two years ago DTP was the main party representing Turkey’s 15 million Kurdish population. DTP leader’s mistakes, attacks of PKK and Turkish deep states plots resulted with supreme courts decision to ban DTP. Then another Kurdish party, which is called BDP was established. Although the party was new, the leader were same, even some more hawkish politicians found place on new board of the new party.

New Kurdish parties hawkish leaders did nothing to contribute AK Party leader, PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s efforts to democratize constitution which was prepared by architect of 12 September 1980 military junta. Recently a package of constitutional amendments were voted on Turkish parliamentary, non of the BDP lawmakers supported it.

Amendments were passed by votes of AK Party, DTP cooperated with natioanalist conservative parties CHP (In fact it calls itself social democrat party) and MHP. These three parties cooperation to stop a democratization package proved structure of Turkish deep state. Actually it is impossible to see Kurdish nationalist party, a Turkish nationalist party and a party which is calling it self as social democrat cooperating to defend juntas’ constitution.

The strange cooperation of DTP provided a crucial opportunity for Kurdish people to see hidden faces behid masks. According to the experts, Kurdish voters support for BDP will decrease at next election and AK Party will benefit from this new situation. Probably MHP will also loose lots of votes.

AK Party is a conservative party, and certainly it has lots of mistakes, we can discuss them at another article also. In this respect what Turkey needs urgently at the moment is a real social democrat party like Britain’s Labour, American’s Democratic Party or French Socialist Party which can defend other’s interests against ruling party AKP..

For today so far as we can see AK Party is doing what the majority of Turkish society, their voters asked them to do at last parliamentary election. As long as they reflect the desire of the majority I am pretty sure that peaceful days and the end of the Turkish masked ball is closer for Turkey.

NEO-SULUKULE, URBAN TRANSFORMATION PROJECTS IN ISTANBUL

Cansu Ekmekçioğlu

(What are cities, built, without the wisdom of its citizens- Bertolt Brecht, 1953)

Eagerness and curiosity were the two exact words that suddenly came into my mind when I decided to go to Sulukule- the Roma district in the buffer zone near the land walls of Istanbul’s historical peninsula. Along with the my personal hesitation which derived from going to a new place which I have never visited before, my anxious parents and friends who had gave up to persuade me for not to going ‘there’, had already prepared a ‘security list’ for me and they pleasantly added that thanks to the great efforts of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, we should no longer feel this kind of discomfort and there will be no need for arranging such a list after the urban transformation in Sulukule: • Don’t stay so late • Don’t show your jewelry, mobile phone or camera to anybody in ‘there’ • Don’t act as if you are stranger in ‘there’

Even though I gave a promise to compliance to my ‘To-Don’t-List’ and put a very mitigating ‘Ok!’s beside each of the warning-points, I began to think about what’s ‘really’ going on in Sulukule: Why should I feel this threat now? What’s the real purpose of the mentality which instigates this anxiety and its discourse which makes Sulukule as ‘there’, Romas as ‘those people’ and Gypsie culture as ‘Other’, while ‘cleaning’ the Sulukule settlement from Roma people and compelling them to live in the peripheries of the city centre?
