NO MORE NO MAN’S LAND- TAKSIM SQUARE ON THE MAY DAY CELEBRATIONS

1 MAI

Cansu EKMEKCIOGLU

Despite the oppositions of the deputies of Justice and Development Party (AKP) which was severely criticized for not only banned the use of Taksim Square but also exploded violent confrontation between police and demonstrators for last year’s May Day Celebrations, the declaration saying that May 1 will be an official holiday from now on can be seen as a significant symbol for Turkish unions as well as workers. The decision is symbolic because it signs that decades-old struggle between workers and government in Turkey has now gained a meaningful success on the side of workers. Suleyman Celebi, the head of the confederation of Revolutionary Workers’s Union (DISK) said that “Nobody should view this move as a favor being given to the working class; it is the return of a right, which was wrongfully taken away 30 years ago.”

Yet, this symbolic decision has brought much more controversy question in many people’s mind: Is Taksim going to be open for the May Day Celebration? Since the location, Taksim Square, has become specified with the May 1, 1977 which has been called as ‘Bloody May 1’ with 36 deceased and numvers of incidents of workers, following celebrations has connoted to commemorate those young demonstrators in its very meaning. Though the absence of any official claim about the Taksim Square’s situation as ‘No Mand’s Land’ on the government side, the unions such as DISK, KESK, TMMOB, TTB and also Turkish Communist Party (TKP) declared that they will be in Taksim on this Friday. Yet, President Abdullah Gül compensated this intense situation by saying that Taksim Square must be open for unions.

Another hot debate on this issue is that whether or not the security forces use disproportionate force against the demonstrators. Because in last year’s celebration, zero-tolerance strategy of the municipality and police forces in Taksim is stil alive in memories of most people. It is obvious that this is not the first violent act by the security forces –and unfortunately it won’t be the last- escalating tension between police and demonstrators seems here to stay because the head of Security Directorate Oğuz Kaan Köksal said that the police will still use unidentified-helmet. This means that ‘unidentified violence’ might have seen in Friday’s demonstration.

All in all, it can be said that this year’s May Day celebration seems to held in much more tense situation wherein unemployment, economic crisis, loss of faith in politics are becoming more crucial topics in people’s everyday agenda.

Egemen Bağış Appointed Turkey's New EU Chief Negotiator

eu-turkey1

AKP MP Bağiş has been nominated the tenth State Minister in Cabinet. He is to carry out negotiations with the EU and takes over from previous negotiator Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Babacan. The press centre of the Prime Ministerial Office has announced that AKP MP Egemen Bağiş is to take over as Chief EU Negotiator from Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Babacan (left in picture). He is to become the tenth State Minister in Cabinet.

Only after being chosen by the prime minister as Turkey's new chief negotiator for EU talks, State Minister Egemen Bağış yesterday voiced the government's determination to become a full member of the 27-nation bloc. Formerly held by Foreign Minister Ali Babacan, was turned over to Bağış, ahead of a trip by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Brussels next week. Bağış delivered a speech yesterday at a meeting in İstanbul held jointly by the Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) and the European Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (EUROCHAMBRES).

"We want Turkey to reach to full democracy. If there is a risk in having full democracy, we are ready to take that risk," Bağış told the meeting.

"We will experience some difficulties in the full membership process, but we are determined on this issue. We also know that there is no single country that started negotiations but wasn't able to finish them. Turkey has never been an exception and will not be so now. Turkey will be a very different Turkey when the negotiations are over. The EU will also be a different Europe. Instead of imagining that day now, let's focus on today, negotiations and our business," Bağış added.

WHO IS EGEMEN BAGIS?

He is from Siirt, a south-east region city which is mostly Kurdish populated. He is 39 years old. After studying Business and Public Administration in the USA, he was twice the president of the Federation of Turkish American Associations. He then became deputy chairman of the AKP responsible for foreign affairs. In the previous legislative period he was the Chairman of Turkey-USA Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Caucus. He was also the vice chair of the NATO-PA Turkish Group and the chairman of the Transatlantic Sub-Committee. He was awarded the Italian Cavaliere State Recognition in June 2006. He also served as the founding Chairman of the Advisory Board for the “Istanbul 2010” Project (European City of Culture).

DURATION OF MILITARY OPERATIONS IN GAZA TESTIFY HAMAS IS NOT WEAK RIVAL

After this, the international organizations began op to pressure on the Palestinian administration so that it would boycott the government of Hamas. Israel and international organizations required the President of Palestinian Administration, Mahmud Abbas, not to go to dialogue with the MPs from Hamas. Later, Fatah stole ministers of Hamas so that the internal situation in Palestine would take the shape of Civil War and Hamas would be removed from the government. Fatah considered that taking adequate steps, Hamas will make armed resistance. However, Hamas did not go on the provocative policy of Fatah and maintaining stability, attempted to prove to the international community what it is the supporter of peace in the region. In 2007 in order to completely gain control on the governance, to govern underground groups and control all security services in the territory, committing military coup in Gaza, Hamas removed all subordinates forces of Fatah from there. Seeing that the situation goes out of control, Israeli government closed all checkpoints of Gaza and established blockade with Gaza to pressure on Hamas. However, in its turn, Hamas launched home-made rockets “GASSAM” to the Jewish populated areas in order “to wake” Israeli community and to draw the attention of the world community to the events in Gaza. The super-state of the Middle East – Israel, which remained helpless before the rockets “GASSAM” of Hamas, signed temporary ceasefire agreement with Hamas in June 2008 with the mediation of Egypt. Important conditions for ceasefire were: removal of blockade of Gaza, opening of all border checkpoints, giving permission for import of foodstuffs, medicine and fuel to the territory by the organizations of humanitarian aid. However, none of the items was implemented. This lead to more worsening of Hamas’s position on Israel. And on Dec. 27 Israel started military operations in the Gaza Strip, which was unexpected for Hamas. The goal of Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip is to put an end to Hamas’s terror. However, the launched military operations against Hamas did not yield serious success to the Israeli armed forces. In contrary, the deaths of local population as a result of military operations damaged Israel’s international authority, as well as intensified anti-Semite mood in Arab and other Muslim states. Even Turkey, which is the closest and reliable ally of Israel in the Middle East, expressed its sharp protest against the military operations. The Jordan government said that it would reconsider its ties with Israel. Israeli media also is not indifferent to the issue. Israel does not make any conclusion out of the Lebanon war in 2006, the Israeli Maaref newspaper released.

INEVATIBLE WEAKNESS OF MIGTHINESS

People had been running after for new inventions since the begging of human’s life. Creating a new invention in order to meet unsatisfied needs of people or to complete the a miss part of old version of these inventions was the reason of new researches. These inventions have been occurring through the many topics such as philosophical, sensual, scientifically or technological from many years. Because of human beings always look for the best solutions and outputs this invention-seeking process seems to continue in the future as well. ’Since 18th century Europe countries live under the light of rationalism but this ideology was not enough for the needs at that times’ according to Morgenthau. He also mention that some ideologies were not enough the protect the demolition of WWI such as liberalism, socialism and communisms. He also completed the miss points of fascism. Furthermore Waltz tried to improve and completed the missing or wrong thinking’s of Morgenthau as himself. These thinking’s was the ideology of realism. Realism was the main ideology at that time with its types. The traditional and structural realism. Traditional realism was founded by Morgenthau, and the structural realism founded by Waltz. Since the 1960’s under Shah Iran have been running after new programme by using the technology and its entire source to the world. It calls ‘Iran Nuclear Programme’. It is also know crisis between Usa-Iran. I will mention on the the best solutions for the current nuclear crisis from the Waltz perspective because his ideas are much more expectable than the Morgenthau. I will also tell the reasons of why the Morgenthau can not explain better this case.

Generating electricity without dipping into the oil supply to sell abroad is the aim of Iran Nuclear programme as Iran’s leadership. Waltz believes the importance of power. For this reason Iran wants to improve its nuclear power. But there is miss understanding from the perspective of USA and from most of Western countries. First of all USA and most of countries supported and helped the Iran for this programme. After the regime changed in Iran they have not been support the action of Iran. Because western countries and USA believed that Iran would produce a nuclear weapon and nuclear bomb. This is not true according the Iran. As the president Mahmoud Ahmedinejad of Iran; ‘Atomic Bomb not useful and reject in international relations. If it was useful, it would protect to diffusion of SSCB or it could solve Americans’ problem that live in Iran. The term of bomb ended’ and also emphasize that Iran Nuclear Programme is not for military, it’s for civil people but Bush administration is worried about this situation. There can not be argue of some countries power such as Russia and China from the perspective of technology and from the most of part. One of most powerful state is the USA. Like all powerful states, they wish to protect their power. Protecting your own power is important for Waltz. Moreover he mention that ‘the actors could change in order to have the power but the unchanged thing is only the maintaining the position which you already have ’. If we look the Iran case; Iran’s Nuclear program made USA think of its own existing power. Growing actions in the Iran create anxious of USA. Because of this reason they tried to solve this problem by using diplomacy which is mean according to Waltz ‘Balancing the power’ because it gives advantage for USA. War becomes the last action for the states while the Cold War. Possibility the war is less because such as USA, Soviet Union and China had own their great powers ensued prudent a structure at the foreign politics and living profit defined for sure and there are nuclear weapons. Furthermore, as Waltz nuclear weapon’s value was more expensive so using the nuclear weapon was difficult. Because of this reason it provided to peace between great powers which have a nuclear weapon have responsible. More better is that they interact closely because Waltz believe that ‘actions separately taken strongly affect the pair, or the trio, whether or not there are relations to observe and transactions to count (1)’

The basic principle of international system and still the important is the balancing of power and anarchy according to Waltz. Maximizing the power is not important in the anarchic system. Anymore, if there is a balance of power there is no anarchy. The important thing is to protect the system’s position. Because of this reason ‘power is a means it is not aim, not an end’. So you have to make deal with other country for balance of power. This state should not be more powerful than your state. If it is more powerful than your state you can not protect your power and than balance of power could come to end. States has to deterrence power. These are very important in the international system according to Waltz. Because of Iran has deterrence power even though USA is much more powerful than Iran, they can not attack the Iran. Because there is competition of weapons in the system and also between two states. The Cuba Missile Criss can give an example at that point from the earlier years. USA and Soviet Union could not attack each other even though they have nuclear weapons. They deterrence each other with weapons. The distribution of capacity was the equal between two states. The structure did not let share power with others. This situation is the same in Iran case. Iran and USA have equal capacity as we mentioned that the system is anarchic in the international area as Waltz and realist. If the intensity less and if there is an equality distribution of capacities is increase the stability in the system according the Waltz. Balance of power is the main and indispensable element of system so USA and Iran should make deal with Iran because of increase the stability for the international system. Both state has to revision the opportunities in a peaceful way its way of with balancing the powers.

‘Political structure bases on system not on actor.’ According the Waltz. A crazy man and his interests not important for Waltz in the international relations. Because there is a system and states go trough the system. The system is build by structures which are close each other and that is determines that how you play in international relations. The system is similar with market. There is anarchic structure and there are companies. Because of many companies competition is inevitable like in the international relations. They spend all of their efforts to maximize their profits. States are in the same situation. They want to maximize their profits as well. Some of countries face with distraction. Some of them try to not for the distraction. If we look for the structure and try to act its rules, we could minimize the conflicts between nations. For example; Iran’s nuclear program we could understand the both of part that why Iran want to develop this programme. For USA part we could understand that changing of its behaviors after the political changes in Iran. USA and Iran have rights according to Waltz argument. But again both sides want to gain their wishes .Both of sides begun to game without any chance of the loser part so actors do not important, the important is the system’s structure because ‘The actors could change but the anarchic structure is never change and the anarchy is still continue’ and ‘rules and the structure of international relations is not thing that can be change by actors’ according to Waltz.

The father of traditional realism is Morgenthau mentioned about power so much more than Waltz. He explains this case with the power of the weakness from the view of Iran. Iran was weak in front of USA but it is trying to improve his nuclear power under the nuclear programme. According to he ; ‘ the war is inevitable ’. But the domestic politics is so effective for international relations. America could be more different but its domestic politics made them prefer to choose much more diplomatic way -balance of power- rather than bloody.

The system was the important for Waltz. According the Morgenthau the actors are more important than system in international relations because of human nature. The actors has to responsible not just with the protect of their honor. They have also responsible for the survival of their state. From the perspective of survival of country can be true but It is not true according to Waltz because human nature can change but they system does not change. Because of this reason Morgentahau can not explain the Iran Nuclear programme very well because the programme is the necessity of system not the necessity of actors or leaders. the actors can be change in time. USA and Iran now the power but what about tomorrow? Tomorrow, another strong country will afraid from the threat of someone else as the still the system remains as it is. The human nature should not be that minimize the conflicts in terms of international relations system. Because of these reasons Waltz’s ideas are much more expectable for Iran Nuclear Program. The historical process shows us that how the system and the structure are so important. Finally but not the end point is the ‘Iran Nuclear Conflict’ is still continuing and it shows that it will go on many years because sides wants more powerful than each other’s wish to be the leader of Middle East but Iran does not want to give change to USA. After the Obama is elected as a president of USA,he had his speeches about Iran Programme and it was the same with Bush. He had his last speech as we see from here the actor changed but because of system structure did not change sides can not do anything. The president of USA Barrack Obama warned to the global leaders and also the President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to ‘stop Iran from enriching uranium and acquiring nuclear weapons’ 2 and mentioned to his threatened from the regime as he say the Iranian ‘regime is threat to all of us ’ 3 At the same time Russia began to help with the selling the surface air missiles to Iran to defense the attacks that will come from Israel and Usa for the nuclear buildings in Iran.4 It seems that in the international system between states the inevatible weaknes of mightiness; and the powerful of weaknesses will continue for many years because of a nature of system and its structure.

EU Watches-Israel Sinks Our Ship

It has been 9 days…we are watching an alive horror movie directed by Israel, I don’t know what do you think about this movie but I am pretty much sad for watching this horrible scenario. 10 days…result: 600 lives…1 live is 1 human, child, father, mother, brother or a sister. It is really difficult to find a word to protest these dishonest attacks, the scenes from broadcasted from TV’s are completely unbearable. Thousands of Turkish people took part in demonstrations in Istanbul, Ankara, Diyarbakir streets to protest Israel’s unfair attacks. Turkish PM Mr Erdogan visited Middle East countries for collaboration and provide conditions for a cease-fire. Unfrotunately still there is no hope for cease-fire because Israel goverment needs to kill more innocent people to be winner of the parliamentary election. Bytheway Mr. Bush condemned innocent. I have no idea about their reasons but it’s so weir and European leaders seem like glad and and they don’t want to disturb Israel until the last Palestinian killed by Israel drones. I hope European citizen will wake up their leaders and call them end sufferin dramas of Palestinians. The perfect useless organization UN is again trapped by USA and even couldn't call for simple cease-fire. Nonetheless we shouldn’t forget 'we are on the same ship, there is a hole at the Middle East part of our ship' and I am afraid if we stay so motionless Israel will sink our ship.

SHOE-CIDE ATTACK & INSULT CULTURE OF THE WORLD

As you know an Iraqi journalist attempted a shoe-cide:-) suicide attack on George W. Bush, throwing a shoe during his last visit in Iraq. For Iraqie culture throwing shoe or hitting somebody with she is the harshes way to insult. While Iraqi courts still discussing on to judge the journalist with terrorist attack or cultural insult protest I wanted to learn about insul culture of the world. After asking Babelians and a short search I realized that our great world has a very wide insult culture from Sweden to Azerbaijan.

ITALY:

Italy: Miglena D.

As in Italy, the mother is No1 followed by the Devil and muddy waters. Here are some illustrations - The extremely rude but often used, especially by taxi drivers and other bed-tempered persons "Fuck your mother!" - "Go with the devils" - rather rude, means "I am very mad and don’t want to deal with you any more!" - "Let muddy waters drag you" - rude, means "I am very mad with you!", a little bit archaic and less used today than the previous two.

Giovanni A. In Italy, we also love using the Holy famiuly and...I guess there isn't anything more than spitting on someone for manifesting our hate...not so polite as you see!

GERMANY

Sergio-Berlin

In Germany, a very common and useful insult ist "asshole": "Arschloch", an interessant one is "Wichser", which can translated by wanker, or "Fick dich" is the local "fuck you". Well the insults here are quite like in England.

SPAIN:

You certainly know the gesture that all heavy metal fans do to at a concert, well this gesture is a big insult in Spain. if you do this gesture to someone, like on the cool picture, it means that your wife sleeps with another man and put you the horns (cuernos) like those of a bull.

FRANCE

In France, one of the common insult is : "sob / prick / fucker / cocksucker !" ("enculé !" in French, for your insult culture;)) It sounds like homophobic but the court did not rule on the possible of sexist or homophobic insults, including connotations the term "asshole", although French law also prohibits this kind of. However, French people use many insults daily, like "fuck your mom" (it's also the name of a famous French Rap band).

POLAND:

Polish politicians are kind of ahead of the rest of society, they insult each other in a kind of "sophisticated" way. a few most interesting interesting insults of last few years: - Lech Kaczynski, when he was a president of Warsaw and candidate for president, told one of the guys around him "spieprzaj dziadu" ("fuck off you beggar"), which was, for a few months, one of the most popular insults: http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=3FMp9Ec3pcY - a few months ago ojciec Rydzyk, the boss of the ultra-catholic station Radio Maryja insulted Maria Kaczyńska (the president's wife) telling that "nie powinniśmy nazywac szamba perfumerią" ("we shouldn't call the cesspool the perfumery"). later he told that he was misunderstood and it wasn't talking about Maria Kaczynska. - Ludwik Dorn, a politician that used to cooperate with Kaczynski brothers, was called a few times "the third twin" ("trzeci bliźniak") -not political one:) during the show "Gwiazdy tańczą na lodzie" (a tv show, where stars skate) the producers has chosen the most controversial stars, which tell blatantly what they mean, so the fights (sometimes vulgar, sometimes just funny) between the jury, the contestants and the announcer were common. so generally when you want to insult someone in Poland, you should mention something done by the person, or stick to the characteristics (physical of psychical) of the person. and when you don't know what to say, you may always make this gesture: http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=rZFv3JDJwks , popularised during the olympic games in Moscow by Wladysław Kozakiewicz, who managed to make a great jump in spite of booing of the Russian audience.

GREECE:

Elina M.

In Greece we have a weird insult, of course there are a lot of words but i think the most interesting is what we call "moutza!" Actually you extend your hands and in the same time your fingers in the face of the other person. I know it seems a little bit like saying hello but no, because when a person does it he has a certain expression (bad) in his face and he is doing it abrupltly. Very common is to see it among drivers. It s very bad insult!!

SWEDEN

Waldemar.

In Sweden, insults are mainly about hell and the devil. "Go to hell", "may the devil take you" are rather rude insults. The Swedish culture uses very little body language, even the obscene gestures are imported. This one can be seen in Sweden http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Give_the_finger Sticking out your tongue is less obscene, more of a teasing insult. Why is this? They seem rather cool as insults, don't they? That is because Swedish culture is a consensus culture, formed in a very homogenous population. Swedish culture tries to minimize conflicts, especially in intrapersonal relations. For better or worse. We haven't been a war since 1815, but some conflicts should come up in the open to get solved, and they don't because someone "might feel sad". The real Swedish insults are sneaky and anonymous, in order to hide the insulter's identity back into the group. Written notes or graffitti in public places are such insults. An example could be a well seen written sign at a workplace saying; "Carl's mom doesn't work here" (meaning that that person is not doing his chores at the workplace).

UNITED KİNGDOM

Nabeelah S.

- You could ‘moon’ someone – take down your trousers and show them your ass in a full moon effect ... but its more because its vulgar not because its English culture.

- It’s bad to stick your fingers up – both index fingers or the middle finger

JAPAN:

Saru is a Japanese word that means “monkey”, and is used very much often when Korean looks down on Japanese. Anyway, this “copy_saru” is very energetic to insult Japan, especially Japanese Language by making so many threads after another on the message board. Only today, Feburary 11th, he has already posted 21 threads, though todays is not over yet.

AZERBAIJAN:

Rufiz: H.

The worst way of insult is to spit on the person making you angry.

TURKEY:

Ozi

In Turkey, swearing or spittig on a guy while he was with his girlfriend, wife or mum is the harshest way insult on his personality. Another insult is to ask guy if his mother, wife or sister was beatiful is really dangerous. Unfortunately the result is usually a bloody fight.

Turkey, watch out for the next George W. Bush

At the moment I am on a press trip in Turkey which is supposed to show journalists the progress made in applying EU accession criteria. Believing in the goodwill and sincerity of this attempt, I had yet to discover that the Turkish court banned recently British scientist Richard Dawkins’ Web site for its atheist and blasphemous content. As highly as I valued this summers judgement to not ban the Islamic AKP party (that won over 46% of the parliamentary seats in the last elections), I am shocked by this decision. Freedom of speech and a free press are the pillars of democracy. If religion is turned into politic dogma, a free society cannot evolve. Such acts hollow out the meaning of democracy. I am not only talking about Muslim countries - the same judgement applies to the Superchurch America of George W.

In that context you have to read a comment in yesterdays edition of the daily Tarf that upset Turkish Prime minister (and leader of the AKP) Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The editor said that Erdoğan started out as Obama but has now become Bush.

Turkey might economically perform way better than Romania and Bulgaria, but if it hops on the fundamentalist train, it can’t accuse the EU of cynical double standards.

Turkey Wins Race for Seat on UN Security Council

After five years of intense lobbying, Turkey was elected on Friday to the United Nations' influential Security Council for a two-year term starting on Jan. 1. Turkey secured a seat at the powerful body in the first round of the vote, receiving 151 out of 192 votes in the UN General Assembly. Austria won the second seat reserved for the Western European and Others Group with 132 votes, while financial crisis-hit Iceland was defeated in the election with 87 votes. In addition to Turkey, the UN Assembly also elected Japan, Austria, Mexico and Uganda to the Security Council for 2009-10. They will serve alongside five other non-permanent members that hold their seats for another year, and five permanent members. Turkey, absent from the Security Council for almost half a century, has been lobbying for a seat at the 15-member council since 2003. Foreign Minister Ali Babacan was in New York for a final round of lobbying, trying to drum up support for Turkey's bid until the very last minute by highlighting the country's growing role and regional influence as a peacemaker
