No Choice Except Independence for Kosova

Özcan TİKİT, Cafebabel
Aleksandar Simic, Serbian PM Advisor threated Kosova against independence. With all means Serbia will defend it’s independence, Simic said. Let’s think about what advisor, implied by saying “with all means”, certainly he wants that too. As a forecast it’s not difficult to see Kosova will declare its delayed independance maybe not today today, this month or this year but it should be known; Kosova will ultimately use this right and Serbia has no choice but accepting.
Finally and fortunately US and UN will keep their promise, which was given in 1943 at Bujan Conference. After Crotia, Macedonia, Bosnia Herzegovina and Montonegro, the last nation under the hegemony of former Yugoslavia will be used self determination right and became Europe’s youngest independent country.
Will Serbia block this independance.? While the war crimes committed by Milosevic’s Serbian butchers against humanity were so fresh in our minds, can Serbia attempt to a second slaughter. The war in 1999 had created 10,000 dead and one million refugees. Serbians who had supported Milosevic for revocation of Kosova, today are not allowed to say "Kosova hasn’t got self determination right". Certainly any person who can coherently say “Yes I am human” shall not support Serbia.
We live in 2007 not 1998 or 1989, hence I dont want to think Serbia can attack Kosova again.

The author is 100% right except for one thing: After Kosova separation from Serbia, at least as relevant and at least as urgent is the separation of the West Macedonia into a separate state, because it practically has 100% Kosovar population, from (FYRO) Macedonia.
I am an American who believes in the value and principles of the Declaration of Independence. It sets out the exact reasons why our Revolutionary War was fought----because all men are given the right to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness by their Creator.
Serbia does not believe in such rights, not even for its own people----for anyone to think that they would allow them for
the ethnic Albanian Muslims is a denial of reality.. The reality has already been in fact been demonstrated in 1999 by the invasion, and the rape, murder and destruction in Kosova.
Has anything changed among Serbians since then? Why would any sane person think that anything would be different now. If nothing changes, then nothing has changed.
As soon as world attention shifts away from Kosova, the Serbs will be oppressing the Kosovars again, but with even greater hatred and revenge.
Kosova must declare its indepence NOW, while the World is watching...
I would just like to ask all of you, does anyone know anything about the history of Kosovo? Since 11th century, Kosovo has been the heart of Serbian empire, it has been a shield of Europe, defending Europe from the attacks of Ottoman empire. There are hundreds of serbian churches, schools etc on the territory of Kosovo dating since 11th century. There is religious and historical heritage of Serbian people that cannot be underestimated.
The albanian people have been encouraged during the 70s to move to Kosovo. I`m guessing that you are not very well informed about the sitation in Kosovo. Serbian people are actually the minority on Kosovo and are in a very bad and oppressed position, considering the fact that in the last 10 years, there is an open anti-serbian capaign, many serbian monuments have been burnt down, serbians are not allowed to walk freely in the capital of Kosovo (the city is divided in two parts- serbian and albanian. does that remind you of anything?) and, unfortunatelly, many more things.
I am from Serbia.
I am very familiar with the situation.
Serbian assemby has the right to annulate the decision of independance(because it is made without the agrement of both sides).
To tell you the truth, I think that Kosovo should be independant (because the state is the `people`s institution`).
But it hurts me very much to read something like
`the Serbs will be oppressing the Kosovars again, but with even greater hatred and revenge.`
or
`Certainly any person who can coherently say “Yes I am human” shall not support Serbia.`
I am sure, that whenever you come to Serbia, you will change your mind. Don`t talk with so little information taken into consideration. Maybe even, don`t talk until you see it with your own eyes.
It is hard to imagine that Serbian people could walk freely in the dominated Albanian cities and villages in Kosovo. That is true that they are oppressed but still that is that is the inevitable heritage from the past. I have been to Serbia and now I am living in Kosovo. I have spoken to many young Serbian people-most of the agree that Kosovo should be independent, yet that is a huge, difficult, psychological issue for the Serbians to deal with the total separation of Kosovo.
BTW, the capital city of Kosovo-Prishtina is not divided into two parts, it is Mitrovica which is cut in two pieces by River Ibar and its famous bridge. And there aren't hundreds of Serbian churches in Kosovo, there are some very essential, but not a large number.
From the outside it seems that Serbs don't want to let go a country which they have openly massacred 10 years ago. So while it's understood that there is a Serbian heritage in Kosovo, Serbs are in a weak position in front of the international community. This being said, I agree with jovana dadic that you should not stigmatise Serbs as violent creatures. It would be unfaire and adding fuel to an already sensitive issue. If France and Germany were able to reconcile after WWII, surely, Serbs and Kosovars can do the same. The problem is finding out how.
Paulina seems to think that many young Serbian people are for independance of Kosovo- but where are they? Why don't they speak up? Why do we only hear about the angry Serbs?
Hi Dadic
I know about history of Serbia and Kosova enough to urge independence. Yes you are right Serbie was occupied Kosova to defence Europe from attacks of Ottoman Empire.
Also we can't support any possible anti Serbian attacks in Prishtina, but I wonder why dont you say something about Milosevich and talk about today?
Certainly I wish Serbs and Kosovars could stay togethere, but while this tragic crimes commited by Milosic were so fresh in minds, unfortunally this is just dream.
It is too late to talk about importance of Kosova as part of Serbia. Serbia cant say Kosova ise mine, in Anatolia we have a traditional famous saying about these kind of attitudes; The despot man says "The girl is mine, so its my bussines to hit or love her and nobody can interfere". Yes Serbia's claim on Kosova, remembers me this Anatolian saying.
International community cant respect this kind of claims. Serbia should accustomed to independent Kosova as a friendly neighbouring country...
There can be nothing else except independence for Kosovo. You can not ask the Albanians to join Serbia, a nation that if it wasn't for the international community they would have wiped them out completely.
Now looking at history, serbia is a newcommer in the balkans compared to the Albanians. The Albanians have been located there long before name "Serb" became known to anyone, I think this sums it all up and doesn't need any further comments.
